Music craft

From 2020 there will no longer be set dates for Music craft grades 5 and 6 paper-based exams (written and aural components). They will be available by request.

Theory of Music and Musicianship

AMEB would like to give notice that new Theory of Music set works for Grades 5, 6 and Licentiate diploma in musicology and new musicianship set works for Grades 5 and 6 will be introduced from early 2020. The current set works cannot be used once the new works have been introduced. More information on the exact dates of the changeover will be provided. As part of this change, from 2020, Theory of Music and Musicianship Grades 5 and 6 candidates will need to analyse and answer questions on all set works listed for their grade. New digital publications, Theory of Music analytical notes and Musicianship analytical notes will be available to assist candidates preparing for the set works section of the exam.

Theory of Music

Grade 5

From 2020, set works questions will be added to Theory of Music Grade 5, which has not previously had these questions. To date, students only encountered set works analysis in Theory of Music Grade 6, and it is believed that introducing this earlier will assist candidates in developing their analysis skills and will better align Theory of Music with Musicianship. Candidates from 2020 will need to analyse and answer questions on all set works in the exam. Details regarding the new works set can be found in the theory of music syllabus. A new digital publication, theory of music analytical notes will be available to assist candidates preparing for this section of the exam.

Grade 6

From 2020 the Grade 6 set works have changed and candidates will need to analyse and answer questions on all set works in the exam. Details regarding the new works set can be found in the theory of music syllabus. A new digital publication, theory of music analytical notes will be available to assist candidates preparing for this section of the exam.

Associate Diploma in musicology

There are no changes to the set works for 2020.

Licentiate Diploma in musicology

From 2020 there will be changes to both Group 1 and Group 2 of the set works. Details regarding the new works set can be found in the theory of music syllabus.

Musicianship

Grade 5

New set works will be introduced for Grade 5 in 2020 and candidates will need to analyse and answer questions on all set works in the exam. Details regarding the new works set can be found in the theory of music syllabus. A new digital publication, musicianship analytical notes will be available to assist candidates preparing for this section of the exam.

Grade 6

New set works will be introduced for Grade 6 in 2020 and candidates will need to analyse and answer questions on all set works in the exam. Details regarding the new works set can be found in the Theory of Music syllabus. A new digital publication, musicianship analytical notes will be available to assist candidates preparing for this section of the exam.

Syllabus reviews

A new harp syllabus (including technical work and grade book publications for the first time) is currently in development, scheduled for release in 2020.

A review of the violin syllabus is currently in development, scheduled for release in 2020.

A review of piano for leisure technical work is currently in progress, scheduled for release in 2020.

Notice of withdrawal from examination

From 1 January 2021 the following Contemporary popular music (CPM) syllabuses will no longer be available for examination:

  • bass 
  • guitar 
  • vocal 
  • revised keyboard 
  • drum kit.

These syllabuses will not be directly replaced, so 2020 is the final year that candidates may sit for an AMEB practical examination in CPM. AMEB has partnered with Rockschool to offer AMEB Rockschool exams and encourages candidates who wish to be examined in popular music styles to enrol in Rockschool exams. Details about the range of instrument and voice exams are available on the Rockschool website.
